Open Innovation an Ingredient in Chez Panisse’s Success
A case study in California Management Review found that Alice Waters’ success was built upon open innovation, where a community of collaborators – employees, suppliers, customers, and even competitors – benefit from sharing ideas and building relationships with external teams. Undergrads Innovate with Watson Supercomputer
A Berkeley team of 3 Haas and 3 engineering students are heading to IBM Watson’s headquarters in New York City on January 9 to test the mettle of a new patent application it developed in the Center for Innovation’s “Leveraging IBM Watson” course. The team will vie against nine other teams in the national competition for a prize of $100,000. Read more.

Haas Team Wins 2014 Tech Challenge
Haas’ own team won the 4th Annual Haas Tech Challenge for its proposed system to alert drivers in advance to an available parking spot, ending the frustrating cycle of circling to find a space.

Announcing the Winners of the Intel Global Challenge
The 2014 Intel Global Challenge at UC Berkeley, with $100,000 in prizes on the line, attracted 20,000 teams from 60 countries. The eight finalists presented to judges at the Haas School on November 6. The Grand Prize winner was Lab4U, a Chilean startup which developed technologies to turn cell phones into pocket-sized labs.
Intel Make It Wearable Challenge Winners Announced
Nixie was named the grand prize winner of the Intel Make It Wearable challenge at the finals in San Francisco on Monday, November 3. Nixie’s team, including UC Berkeley graduate Jelena Jovanovic, developed the first wearable camera that can fly. All finalists participated in the Lester Center’s accelerator program.
Haas Alumni Firms on the Fast Track
New Avenue, founded by Kevin Casey (MBA 09), was one of five firms led by Haas alumni that recently made the San Francisco Business Times’ Fast 100 list of the Bay Area’s fastest growing companies. TubeMogul, Back to the Roots, Modify Watches, and cPrime were also honored. Read more.
